The minimally invasive Essure procedure is performed using an instrument called a hysteroscope, a slender, light-transmitting telescope used to view the inside of the uterus. A physician uses the hysteroscope, which is very small in diameter, to visually guide the Essure catheter system through the cervix and uterus to the openings of the fallopian tubes.
