France: Conceptus’ largest market outside of the U.S. is France, where the Essure procedure is the standard of care for permanent birth control. The Essure procedure received official reimbursement in France with recommendation from Haute Autorité de Santé in 2004. Conceptus sells Essure directly in France through its wholly owned subsidiary, Conceptus SAS, which was acquired in 2008. Conceptus SAS has approximately 25 employees including training and sales representatives. Many of the surgical gynecologists in France have been trained to perform the Essure procedure.

United Kingdom: Conceptus Medical Limited (CML) was incorporated in 2009 and became a wholly owned subsidiary to serve as the Company’s direct sales office in the U.K. Also in 2009, the Essure procedure received a positive review from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE), which allows Conceptus access to sell Essure into the country’s National Health System. CML has approximately three employees, including sales representatives, who are focused on training physicians to perform the Essure procedure and increasing sales of Essure in the U.K.

The Netherlands: In October 2011, Conceptus’ newly-formed subsidiary, Conceptus BV, acquired all distribution rights for Essure in the Netherlands. Conceptus BV has four full time employees, including sales representatives, who are focused on accelerating adoption of Essure and achieving standard of care in the Dutch permanent birth control market.
